The city's calendar contains a sharp contradiction: its most congested months are among its coldest and grimmest, while its brief late-spring window offers immaculate mountain air and open boulevards that almost nobody thinks to claim.
April begins the thaw with brisk desert winds and rapidly lengthening days, but May is where Ürümqi reaches its absolute peak. A purely weather-driven guide would point you toward June for marginally warmer nights, but that misses the trade-off. June triggers the onset of summer coach tours and surging flight arrivals. May gives you virtually the same radiant mountain sunlight and daytime highs around 24°C, but without the friction of the high season.
