From November through January, the daytime heat rests in the mid-twenties, cooled by the steady northeast trade winds that whistle through the bay. December marks the absolute zenith of the island's social calendar. If there is a slight trade-off to this window, it is simply that you share the waterfront with everyone else who knows how magical Mindelo is at the turn of the year. Yet the buzz feels organic rather than crowded, propelled by the town's natural gregariousness and breezy warmth.
February is dominated by one defining force: the Mindelo Carnival. For nearly a week, the port transforms into a spectacle of Brazilian-influenced samba schools, towering floats, and thunderous percussion troupes parading beneath colonial balconies. The weather plays along flawlessly. Temperatures hover comfortably around twenty-four degrees with cooling trade winds, keeping the sweat from overwhelming the dancers and the spectators lining the pavements.

August through October brings the only true hesitation in Mindelo's calendar. This is Cape Verde's short, unpredictable wet season, when humid tropical air masses nudge northward and stall the refreshing trade winds. While Mindelo receives far less rain than the greener, southern islands of the archipelago, what does arrive comes in thick, heavy downpours that can briefly flood the cobbled intersections and leave the surrounding volcanic hills dusted with a rare, fleeting coat of green.
September is the stickiest month of the year. Temperatures reach their peak, and without the sea breeze to scour the streets, the heat hangs heavy over the bay.
