Set against the baroque façades and the illuminated fortress above, the square feels cinematic on a frosty evening. Visitors arrive in droves from across the country to soak in the holiday warmth and duck into nearby wine cellars when the chill bites through heavy coats. Expect festive charm, but do not expect quiet solitude.
Once the Christmas decorations come down in January, Eger falls into a deep, genuine dormancy. January and February are raw and biting, with temperatures frequently dipping below freezing and gray overcast skies that hang low between the valley ridges. The streets are remarkably empty.
This is not the season for romantic vineyard wandering, but it has a stark, private appeal for travelers whose sole agenda is soaking in thermal springs. Slipping into steaming mineral waters while the winter air freezes your hair is an intoxicating contrast.
