The air is dry and clear, with rainfall becoming a rarity, but the mountain glare can be relentless.
The secret to surviving summer here lies entirely in rhythm. Arrive the moment the gates open in the morning, when the sun is still climbing behind the eastern cliffs and the stone retains a hint of night coolness. Spend your morning exploring the Tholos of Delphi at the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia down the road, retreat inside the air-conditioned museum during the zenith of the afternoon, and emerge only when the late-day sun casts long, amber shadows across the ruins.
September brings relief from the sharp summer heat while keeping the days long and luminous, but October is Delphi’s crowning glory. By any measure of atmospheric comfort and visual majesty, this is the finest moment on Mount Parnassus. Afternoon temperatures rest effortlessly around 20 degrees, the summer haze vanishes entirely, and the mountain air carries a sharp, invigorating freshness that makes uphill hiking sheer pleasure.
In October, the foliage through Parnassos National Park begins its shift toward copper and russet, framing the ivory columns against deep autumnal color. The tour bus crowds that overwhelm the site in late winter and early spring are subdued, leaving the terrace at the Temple of Apollo tranquil enough to hear the wind rushing through the ravines.
November brings a steep turn back toward winter. Rain returns in heavy sheets, soaking the slopes and dropping apparent temperatures back toward the low teens. The autumn foliage washes away, the cloud deck lowers, and the mountain begins its retreat toward the cold, crowded winter months ahead.
